Abstract
A reflection on 'ethics' in architecture, made through an examination of Francis Bacon's essay 'On Building' (1624). This text has never been given much attention in architectural historical circles; it is examined seriously for the first time here, and related both to Bacon's ideas about ethics, as well as to his theories of knowledge . At the same time, there is an implied reflection back onto the architecture of the house and office building at Stock Orchard Street by Sarah Wigglesworth Architects, completed in 2000. The text is an original piece of historical research, that re-interprets a previously overlooked essay by one of the great minds of the early 17th century, and suggests that it fulfilled a distinct critical role within his work. My essay is also a contribution to the question of how historical research might inform critical writing about contemporary architecture.
