Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate the applicability of diagrams as a form of digital crowdsourcing for participatory urbanism. The rise of Digital Participatory Platforms (DPPs) has allowed users to contribute to urban planning projects by submitting their design proposals using 3D modelling tools, collages, and maps. However, no method exists that captures urban morphology from a connectivity and configurational perspective, which could be done using diagrams as a form of expression. This thesis builds knowledge around the main issues that need addressing when employing diagrams in participatory environments, namely aspects of their usability, interpretability, and their effectiveness in the planning process. To address this knowledge gap, a new type of DPP is developed and tested called Diagram Based DPP (DBDPP). This tool allows users to develop diagrams of connective paths as input and was deployed taking the expansion of UCL into the East of London as a case study where users were asked to make proposals using the tool via a web interface. Different groups participated in the study, allowing for a comparative, non-biased analysis of the results. Furthermore, two studies carried out in parallel to the main experiment determined how drawings produced with the tool would relate to real-world spaces of cities and landscapes. The research shows that diagrams are a viable and efficient method of engaging with stakeholders. Data analysis reveals that participants could use diagrams remotely, but this heavily depended on the clarity of the feedback given by the DBDPP tool and how it was sequenced. Feedback from participants had a measurable impact on further actions taken by designers who reviewed this data. However, the interpretation of diagrams as pieces of urban form was limited due to the design input method and user background. The research concludes with a proposal for a DBDPP-based participatory framework for the general consultation process.
