Abstract

Sports and entertainment events were closed in 2020 to curb the spread of SARSCoV-2. The environmental study of the UK government’s Events Research Programme, which aimed to re-open large events with a minimised risk of viral spread, focused on assessing ventilation effectiveness and risk of exposure to exhaled breath. High-resolution CO2 monitoring as a proxy for ventilation was used to assess air quality and ventilation effectiveness in 21 concession stands in 3 different venues. The average and maximum CO2 values collected over 17 events were used to classify the spaces according to the Indoor Air Quality framework. Although average air quality was good in 86% of the spaces, poor air quality episodes associated with high occupancy scenarios were identified in 12% of concession stands.
