Abstract

The elements of urban form can be understood as the physical attributes of the built environment of cities, while crime can be oversimplified as an action that breaks the rules established in a certain society. This research embraces these two subjects, aiming to address a gap of research on the collective influence of elements of urban form on the occurrence of crimes. The research is structured into three main parts across eight chapters. The first part examines how the theoretical principles associated with urban form may explain their influence on crime patterns. A lack of studies on the collective effect of urban form on crime patterns was identified. A structured review was performed, revealing that while some elements such as bus stops, greenery, and street lighting were extensively examined, sidewalks, carriageways, and plot frontages were overlooked. In the second part, spatial analysis and statistical methods were employed to examine urban form and crime in selected regions within two Brazilian cities. While the examination of house burglaries did not return significant results, it was found that some urban form elements presented mixed levels of association with street robberies. Bus stops, street lighting, and sidewalks had a positive association with robberies, while yards and greenery mostly returned minor or null associations. The third part assess how managing urban elements can reduce crime, through a cost-benefit analysis of crime prevention versus investment. It was revealed that street surfaces including the surface and sidewalks were not worth the investment for crime prevention, while bus stops, street lighting, and greenery had the lowest cost-benefit indices, indicating these to be the more worthwhile investments in crime prevention. By examining urban form and crime in Brazilian cities, this thesis highlights the role of urban planning in mitigating crime, offering insights into the Latin American context.
