Abstract

Researchers as well as teachers and students in foreign language teaching and learning have increasingly acknowledged the benefit of using subtitling as an effective method for language acquisition. Language learning through passively watching videos with subtitles has been widely applied by teachers and its effects have been explored and discussed by scholars in audiovisual translation and second language education. However, research on proactively engaging in subtitling activities has received little attention, especially concerning intralingual subtitling. This study aimed to fill this gap and explore deeply the potential of subtitling activities. An experimental study was conducted with 36 university English as a foreign language students in mainland China, where the role of subtitling in foreign language learning has not been widely recognised by scholars. The experiment studied the effects of proactively engaging in different subtitling activities on OOONA EDU for vocabulary acquisition. The sample was divided into four groups (three intervention groups and one control group performing traditional learning activities). Students received training and two hours of activities for eight weeks. Vocabulary tests were administered before and at four and eight weeks. The results indicated that producing interlingual subtitles with a timed script, generating intralingual subtitles from second-language speech without a script and attempting to write interlingual subtitles from second-language speech without a script all produced significant results for vocabulary acquisition when compared to traditional translation activities. Moreover, students who participated in the latter two activities reported enhanced aural word recognition. Overall, students reported they were highly satisfied with the subtitling tasks. The thesis concludes with a discussion of implications for future studies.
