Abstract

This transdisciplinary research explored ways of establishing neighbourhood-scale, place-based values for wellbeing and quality of life (QoL) in urban public spaces. The values were established using mixed methods and co-defined with communities through a focus on identified local infrastructural challenges, including water, waste, energy and food. The research subsequently investigated how these challenges might be addressed based on the community’s ideas and via nature-based solutions (NbS), to contribute to increased wellbeing and QoL in an inclusive, diverse and ecological manner. The research developed and piloted a novel framework, called Nisba. This framework employs participatory action research and gamification methods, resulting in an innovative approach to widen the employment of NbS in urban development. Applying a case-based methodology, the framework was sequentially piloted in two case study neighbourhoods in Budapest and Beirut, allowing for critical reflection loops, comparative analysis and concept refinement. The empirical work undertaken demonstrates the potential of the Nisba framework and the under-recognised potential of gamification at the nexus of NbS and urban design and development. Engaging local communities from the beginning of a project is at the core of the Nisba. This enables the co-construction of values around wellbeing and the good life. Sequentially, gamification then facilitates knowledge transfer and helps provide a sense of ownership to participants as they co-design and co-create tangible and intangible outcomes. The developed methodology enables participants to make their own connections between nature and their wellbeing, and to contribute to co-constructing pathways to urban wellbeing and the good life within their public spaces.
