Abstract

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) transports heat northward and modulates climate. AMOC change is one of the potential causes for abrupt events in the past, and could contribute to future climate change. How the AMOC responded to changes in forcing experienced during past warm climates is an intriguing and open question. This thesis focuses on investigating AMOC changes in both equilibrium and transient simulations in the Holocene and last interglacial. No changes in AMOC are unambiguously driven by orbital forcing changes directly. There also appears little impact of changes in greenhouse gases, volcanic and solar forcings during the Holocene. Internal variability can explain most of the changes seen in simulations. These conclusions remain robust whether considering the overall AMOC strength or its spatial patterns. The results from these ensembles are not inconsistent with existing proxy records. Including further simulations would increase the confidence of these conclusions especially when looking at spatial patterns and different AMOC components given their model dependence. Further analysis suggests overall AMOC strength does not play a globally important role in explaining surface temperature changes in the midHolocene and lig127k, and hydrology-related proxy reconstructions should be used with caution when interpreting them as related to AMOC changes.
