Abstract

This contribution will look at a selection of fragments from all known Roman Republican tragic playwrights and aim to determine a description of the style of each writer as well as of this dramatic genre in general. As a result of the transmission situation little can be said about larger stylistic structures; thus, the study will focus primarily on aspects of word choice, use of particular forms and effects of word order. Despite the limited material available, some distinctive stylistic features of early Roman tragedy can be discovered.
