Abstract
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book highlights the dynamic nature of the relationships between individuals and groups of different faiths, which were continually in a process of negotiation and renegotiation. It presents a detailed case study of the interaction between particular religious groups in a specific place and time. The book covers different geographic regions and by studying the relationships between Christians, Jews, and Muslims as well as between different Christian denominations. Early modern toleration seemed to contradict its practitioners’ declarations of commitment to the religion they professed, their acceptance of its claims of unique validity, and their desire for its triumph over other faiths. The importance of the interplay between different actors and groups is also borne out when examining how relations between religious groups were temporally and spatially mediated.
