Abstract

Planners are increasingly applying smart growth strategies to contain urban sprawl and reduce automobile dependence. However, relatively little is known analytically about how smart growth influences travel behaviour, largely because the forecasting models used by most city authorities do not include a comprehensive set of variables that capture the features that make up the built environment. So, in order to develop land use and built environment policies that will support sustainable travel patterns, it is first necessary to better understand these relationships. A review of literature finds that this lack of understanding is greatest in relation to the trip generation stage of conventional four-stage models. Taking Dubai City as a case study, detailed analyses and model calibration have been undertaken into trip production and trip attraction rates, adding a range of built environment variables to those traditionally included in such models. Logit models have been developed to investigate the impact of built environment characteristics on activity and tour production, controlling for socio-economic, and activity characteristics. To investigate trip attraction, linear regression models using transformed variables have been developed, for five non-work/school trip purposes. The results of these analysis reveal, on the production side, the significant influence of socio economic, activity characteristics and built environment variables on activity rates and, to a lesser extent, on tour production. For trip attraction, a significant impact of a range of built environment variables has been found, with the magnitude of this impact varying by trip purpose. These results add to academic knowledge about the influence of the built environment on travel behavior and will enable conventional trip generation (production and attraction) models to be refined and made more sensitive to built environment characteristics. In addition, evidence based policy recommendations have been provided, based on the results of the empirical work
