Abstract
The remains of a medieval and post-medieval farmstead were encountered during an excavation at Mill Road, Hailsham, East Sussex. Medieval activity was focused between 1125 and 1350 with the presence of a small farmstead comprising of stock enclosures/pens, field systems, routeways, and the remains of a post and plank structure. This occupation continued until the mid-14th century, when there was a noticeable hiatus in activity. Reoccupation occurred in the 17th century, related to the creation of a farmstead known on historical maps as Hamblins Farm. The remains of Hamblins Farm comprised a house, surrounding outbuildings, boundary ditches for small paddocks, and larger fields for pasture and/or arable. Activity on site declined around the late 19th–20th century, with historical maps showing the house likely to have been demolished sometime between 1842 and 1875 and certainly to have gone by 1899.
