Abstract

The Precolumbian settlements in the karst region of northwestern Puerto Rico, specifically the periphery around the civic-ceremonial center of Caguana, present a dispersed residential pattern of homesteads each with their plazas and/or ballcourts (batey) demarcated by stones. These are preferentially located on abras ('flat ridges') between cock-pit hills (mogotes) above the small valleys. The refuse midden of limited horizontal extension is always dumped downslope toward the valley. This is precisely the pattern observed for the jíbaro (peasant) society since colonial times, thus such sites are frequently found overlying pre-Columbian occupations. Analysis and interpretation of the pre-Columbian settlements depends on the types, intensity and duration of jíbaro activities and their effects upon the landscape. Site 'Vega de Nelo Vargas' serves as an example to address site formation processes and the ethnognegesis of the jíbaro rural peasantry. We evaluate whether the jíbaro settlement pattern at Utu-27 is the result of a process of convergence (analogy) or due to the persistence of inherited traits directly from the taíno (homology).
