Abstract
This chapter discusses progress on sustainable housing, defined as ‘adequate, safe and affordable for all’ by the first target (Target 11.1) of the Sustainable Development Goal: Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG11), also known as the Urban Goal. First, I look at progress to date on the localization of SDGs from an international perspective, to then explore the link between housing and the sustainability agenda and pause on SDG11 and its housing target, Target 11.1. I argue that whilst significant efforts have been made to better monitor and evaluate the housing target, a number of gaps persist which results in slowing down progress in achieving better housing for the world’s urban population. Second, I take a closer look at the implementation of SDGs, SDG11 and the housing target in the UK. As elsewhere, progress is slow with most progress being made ‘locally’ by cities. I find that the nature and scale of ‘inadequate’ housing in the UK lacks in detailed and updated understanding from a sustainable housing target perspective and, more importantly, does not refer to its affordability component. This is problematic bearing in mind the UK’s current housing affordability crisis. In the end of the chapter, I reflect on overall content and draw key points.
