Abstract

This three-part thesis explores the impact of Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) for people with mild-to-moderate dementia. The empirical study specifically investigates the effects of CST when adapted for virtual administration, virtual CST (vCST) particularly on depressive mood and quality of life outcomes. Part one presents a systematic, Numbers Needed to Treat review. It reviews the current evidence for the effectiveness of CST and pharmacological interventions in terms of improving cognitive outcomes of people with mild-to-moderate dementia. The paper concludes with some evidence for CST being an effective intervention for mild-moderate dementia, possibly comparable to acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. However, it describes limitations in the review which limit the conclusions that can be drawn, highlighting the need for further research and reviews in this area. The review provides a picture of the benefits of CST, establishing a rationale for the empirical paper. Part two is a joint empirical study examining evaluating a recently developed vCST protocol as part of a feasibility study. The empirical paper in this volume examines the preliminary effects of vCST on quality of life and depressive mood for people with mild-to-moderate dementia. The paper discusses the effects of vCST on these outcomes, and later outlines the study limitations as well as implications and suggestions for future research. Part three is a critical appraisal of the work undertaken in the systematic review and empirical paper. Reflections are given on the research process, including the recruitment, data collection, study design, and data analysis processes.
