Abstract

This study estimates CO2 emissions from ships on a route-level or voyage basis, to identify the GHG emissions on routes connected to SIDS and LDCs, and assess the variability across global routes. In 2016, routes associated with SIDS and LDCs accounted for an estimated 13% of the total CO2 emissions of international shipping. In general, no specific ship type nor age group of ships plays a consistently dominant role in CO2 emissions by development status. Methods used in this study could enable the evaluation of candidate policy measures at a much more granular level than was previously possible, including the potential for rigorous analysis of potential impacts on States.
