Abstract

Two types of open resonator have been studied; an open resonator with spherical mirrors which is convenient for dielectric measurements on flat sheet specimens and a barrel resonator which is convenient for dielectric rod specimens. A variational method has been used to predict the resonant frequencies of both the empty and dielectric-loaded resonators, and good agreement with experiment is obtained. An improved method of analysing the experimental results is presented. It is shown that by using this method the effect of the imperfections in the theory can be reduced, and extremely accurate results for permittivity obtained.
