Abstract
For better or worse, literary modernism has long been associated with cosmopolitanism. Yet modernism was central to a number of literary nationalisms around the world through the middle of the 20th century. This article asks: might New Zealand literary nationalism be an exemplary instance of modernism’s nationalism? If so, could modernism be peculiarly capable of producing identity in literature – settler and otherwise? What would popular accounts of literary modernism's cosmopolitanism make of that?
