Abstract

Drawing on Linguistic Ethnography (LE), this paper reports on the methodological issues that emerged from a large multi-sited, interdisciplinary research project carried out in a refugee camp called Southside Camp on Lesbos island, between October 2016 and July 2017. The project sought to identify the educational and language needs of refugees residing in Greece. In my capacity as a sociolinguist, two colleagues- a social anthropologist and an education assistant- who provided Greek and English language support and geography classes to children aged 5-13 in the camp, I conducted a nine month team ethnography. Using my fieldnotes, vignettes and research diary, I discuss some of the challenges experienced by the researcher in an educational setting within the refugee camp. The paper aims to show how future researchers could benefit from the findings of the fieldwork experience when conducting research in refugee camps or similar complex educational settings. In this paper, I begin with an overview of Linguistic Ethnography, identifying the researcher’s positionality within this methodological paradigm; I discuss the data collection process and the corresponding ethical issues; and I identify emotional concerns that researchers may experience within challenging field sites.
