Abstract

In the Summer of 1992 HERA accelerated 26.6 GeV electrons and 820 GeV protons and the first e-p collisions were observed in the ZEUS and HI detectors. This thesis will present an initial analysis of the first year of data taking using the ZEUS detector. Hit matching from the ZEUS Central Tracking Detector (CTD) using the FADC and Z-by-Timing systems is studied. The hits matched very well between the two systems which together measure drift time, z-coordinate and pulse height. Matching hits is a powerful method, independent of track reconstruction, for studying data from the CTD. Global event shape distributions are studied in the hadronic centre of mass frame (HCM), using energy clustering in the calorimeter. A preliminary comparison between final state particles and calorimeter cell clusters is presented. Systematic effects introduced by the boost to the HCM frame are discussed. For selected variables, comparison between corrected data and generator level events is made. Finally results are presented relating to hadronic energy distributions from neutral current electron-proton deep inelastic scattering events, at a centre of mass energy of 295 GeV. Comparison is made with QCD models differing in their treatment of the parton emission. The systematic differences associated with cascade model uncertainties, fragmentation and parton distribution parametrisations are also studied.
