Abstract

German Early Romanticism was a movement formed by a group of young poets, writers and philosophers in the city of Jena at the end of the 18th century. They believed pure reason was a one-dimensional approach that left no space for imagination, artistic expression, the poetic and wonder, and hence prevented what the Romantics aspired towards, which is to find ‘ursprünglichen Sinn’ (Novalis). ‘Ursprünglichen Sinn’ translates as original meaning and stands for holistic knowledge, a deeper understanding of life, our inner selves and our relation to the physical as well as the spiritual world. In their search and aspiration to find ‘ursprünglichen Sinn’ the Romantics developed and employed various concepts in their writings, such as the perpetual striving for the ineffable, unattainable and the infinite (the search for the Blue Flower), Romantic longing (Sehnsucht ), the act of romanticising, Progressive Universal Poesie , the arabesque, the Romantic fragment and the notion of wonder and the Wunderbare . In my thesis I investigate these concepts by probing and defining them as methodologies in my art practice in order to explore the following research questions: How can Romantic literary concepts such as romanticising, the arabesque, the Romantic fragment and Poesie be employed and executed in a contemporary fine art practice? What does it mean to be a Romantic visual artist now and what are the (pre)conditions involved? How does a Romantic visual artist encounter the world, interact with things and convey a Romantic mindset through art practice? What role does Romantic longing and the search for the Blue Flower play in progression of a creative process? Where and how can we still find the Wunderbare today and what potential does wonder offer within the Contemporary in regard to knowledge production and the creation of meaning? And finally, what is the relevance of the Early German Romantics’ concepts today?
