Abstract

This final report is based on an evaluation of the CTK Knowledge and Pedagogy Expertise Networks. The networks have focused on two specific key stages and five subjects: KS4 and KS5 English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics and, in this phase of our work, we have sought to scale up our reach to work with an increased number of teachers from state and independent schools from in and around Greater London. Activities were managed through a hub run by Christ the King Sixth Form College, and the project took place between January 2016 and October 2017. The rationale for this project was based on key findings from our first LSEF cross-sector action research study, which identified the importance of strong, up-to-date subject knowledge for enhancing and extending the teaching and learning experience for most able students to effectively support them to achieve their predicted A/A* potential. This may seem rather obvious, but this is why it was all the more surprising to also learn that the professional CPD market appears to offer very few subject-specific, knowledge-focused opportunities for teachers to maintain and develop their subject expertise. This report discusses our hub activities over the funded period, and examines the extent to which they have resulted in our anticipated outcomes at teacher, pupil and whole school level.
