Abstract

The majority of the world’s population, now, live in urban areas, and urban areas also have the poorest subset of the world’s population. Urban areas, including the urban sprawl, have a number of different zones with different functionality. Health inequalities within urban areas can be as wide as those between high- and low-income countries. High levels of manmade pollution found in urban areas are often transferred into the indoor environment through ventilation, at a detriment to population health. The field of urban health uses the context of the urban area as an exposure when looking at the determinants of health in urban settings, and has also been described as public health specific for cities. The European Public Health Association (EUPHA) is an international multidisciplinary scientific organisation bringing together more than 19,000 public health professionals across the European region. As well as having a vision to improve health and wellbeing, and to narrow health inequalities, it encourages interdisciplinary knowledge sharing as an approach to help achieve its vision. EUPHA has 24 operational sections, covering a variety of public health themes. One of the closest to the built environment and air quality is the Urban Public Health section, with more than 1,300 members across Europe. Currently, the two Vice Presidents of the Urban Public Health Section are representing the UK and one is a member of the UKIEG. This presentation aims to raise awareness to the members of the UKIEG of the vision and actions of EUPHA and especially those of the Urban Public Health section, as well as discuss the potential that could be developed for collaborations between the UKIEG and EUPHA, fostering exchange to contribute to the discourse on the Sustainable Development Goals.
