Roman and Byzantine Papyri from Oxyrhynchus.

Abstract
This thesis offers the edition of thirty-one unpublished papyri, with transcriptions, translations and commentaries. Of these, twenty-nine come from the Oxyrhynchus collection of the Egypt Exploration Society, and the remaining two from the British Library. Despite their varied nature, the texts have a common theme, ‘crime and justice’, and shed further light on the administration of justice in post-Augustan Egypt. They expand our knowledge of the various officials responsible for the maintenance of public order in the absence of a proper police body, of the stages a citizen had to undergo in order to obtain justice, as well as of the nature and consequences of various offences. The first section consists of six literary papyri, all of them fragments of Aeschines’ In Timarchum, a speech that suits the main theme. They date from the late first to the early fourth century. Their contribution to our understanding of the transmission of the text in relation to the medieval manuscripts is valuable. Editions of documentary papyri of the Roman and Byzantine periods (second‒seventh century), occupy the following four sections, arranged on the basis of date and context. They include seven summonses, a note on the appointment of a ‘thief-catcher’, a petition to the emperors, a memorandum to a symmachus, a notice of charges, and three lists of ‘malefactors’, prisoners detained (partly) in the Apion estate, and their offences. Four documents from the end of the third century add to the archive of Aurelia Serenilla, previously known from two other texts. These are petitions and records of proceedings, which allow the reconstruction of the phases of a long-lasting dispute over inheritance. The final section contains two Roman summonses of Arsinoite provenance, included for comparison with the Oxyrhynchite summonses.
