Abstract
This thesis is focused on the psychological concept of mentalization using a developmental psychopathology approach and is presented in three parts. Part one is a literature review which explores how well the concept of mentalization can be measured in adolescents, taking into consideration the impact of social changes and the continual development of brain structures during this period. The review identified 13 measures that have been used to assess mentalizing ability in adolescents. The psychometric properties of these measures are discussed. Part two is an empirical research paper focusing on the impact of arousal on mentalizing ability in parent-adolescent dyads. Thirty-six securely attached parent-adolescent dyads completed a mentalizing measure before and after completing stress or control condition tasks. The findings of the study and implications for research and clinical practice are discussed. Part three is a critical appraisal of the process of completing the thesis. The critical appraisal offers a formal reflection on the challenges and learning gained from completing the literature review and the empirical paper as well as discussions about the future directions for research.
