Abstract
I argue that some of the central doctrines of Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus can be seen as addressing the twin problems of semantic unity (the unity of the proposition) and metaphysical unity (the unity of facts). Wittgenstein's claim that pictures in general and propositions in particular are facts offers a solution to the problem of semantic unity: objects in the world are represented as combined with one another in the same way in which the constituents of the representing fact are actually combined. Concerning metaphysical unity, Wittgenstein maintains that facts are ultimate units, not the result of combining more basic items.
