Abstract
The focus of this paper is the use of the Portuguese language in identification practices by a small group of Brazilians living in the Brazilian community of London. I firstly aim to provide a general account of the main political, social, demographic, cultural and linguistic factors affecting these Brazilian migrants, examining in particular the links berween language and identity from the perspective of a group of mothers who take their children to Portuguese lessons. I then focus on three of the offspring to assess how they are affected by their mothers' self-identification. Hence, this paper seeks to provide insight on the irnportance of language in the construction of identity of a group of mothers of Brazilian heritage in England, and how their positionins affects their children's identification and linguistic practices.
