Abstract
When do children with a serious medical condition begin to be old enough to understand, and consent to their treatment? Katy Sutcliffe describes her daughter Ruby’s reactions when she developed diabetes at 15 months of age. Ruby, at age 4 years, and later at age 5 years, adds some of her views. Then we consider what Ruby’s story tells us about very young children’s consent.
