Four criteria have been identified and used to evaluate the textbook narratives with. The broader aim of the special issue in which this article appeared was to assess whether the change to democracy in post-communist Eastern Europe has had an effect on citizenship education. Are East-European states now promoting more inclusive identities and have they now exchanged the monolithic politicised narrative of the past for a neutral narrative emphasizing multiple perspectives? And how do they compare in this regard to the communist states in Asia? These questions are highly relevant for societies making the transition to democracy. The author was a guest editor of the special issue in which the article appeared and compiled the various contributions to this issue. d.
