Abstract
This chapter addresses the major challenge of public health: how to address the health inequalities experienced by people living in different places, with different origins and cultural and religious identity, occupation, gender, education and socioeconomic status. Meeting this challenge requires the participation of these people in collating what we know about public health problems and how to address them, and making change happen. Participation may be by individuals or collectives, in a range of forums. It may be limited to eliciting people’s views, or it may involve shared decision-making. There are agreed principles and organisational structures and procedures associated with successful public participation.
