Abstract
The ideas about ‘fighting spirit’ and ‘positive mind over body’ responses are both based on the same two beliefs. First that the person concerned understands about the cancer, the risks and the treatment options. And second that the person is able to make choices and decisions. However, people still often hold back, not only from informing children about their cancer, but also from offering them choices or seeing them as able to have any control. This article reviews arguments for and against informing and involving children during their cancer treatment, and then considers how the arguments relate to fighting spirit and positive thinking.
