Abstract
Responsible research and clinical practice involve four kinds of willingness: to be open to new knowledge; to examine the evidence that underlies knowledge claims; to replace older ideas with the latest up-to-date evidence; and to change beliefs and practices in the light of new knowledge. Strangely, the same standards are not applied to two frequently heard concepts: `children cannot give consent’, and `therapeutic research’. This paper critically examines both concepts.
