Additional information: | This paper was originally presentd as part of an ESRC seminar series- Education for a knowledge economy? and will be published in a book co-edited by the author. It begins by commenting that although the idea of a knowledge economy is widely used, there is rarely any attempt to address the issue of knowledge itself. The paper draws on a range of authors including Bernstein, Bachelard and Vygotsky to make a case for a realist sociology of knowledge and its possibilities both for the curriculum and for re-thinking the role of knowledge in a knowledge economy.
