Additional information:	This article provides a detailed critique of statistical approaches to understanding race inequality in education. The article is highly original in terms of its content and style: it is presented as a CRT (critical race theory) 'chronicle' using invented characters to provide an accessible and engaging format for an explorartion of the inherent limits to quantitative approaches to racism in education. To this point CRT has focused almost exclusively on qualitative data; hence, this article is likely to become a key reference point in the development of CRT as an interdisciplinary perspective in education studies.
