Additional information:	This article is one article within a comparative study of eight international models of teacher education. It begins by setting the English national and political scene which formed the basis for changes in initial teacher education and then examines a number of elements such as: an increased role for schools; a variety of training routes; strengthened mentoring arrangements and different forms of assessment. The article draws on geography for case studies but would be useful to anyone wishing to know about the development of initial teacher training since the late 1990's.
