Abstract

The objective of this paper is to define and quantify how pre-Columbian societies engaged with their landscapes through structured movement, as the result of new types ofsocio-political organization, reflected in the elaboration of monumental architecture. The analysis draws on extensive data on the southern proto-Jé archaeological culture, which has been collected by preceding programs of research in the eastern La Plata basin. This seeks to develop a series of case studies on monumental earthworks, dubbed mound and enclosure complexes, using computational modelling and Monte Carlo approaches to geospatial analysis.
