Abstract

Indoor air quality (IAQ) influences building energy consumption and the well-being of building occupants. The existing environmental design practices rely on dynamic thermal simulations and compliance with prescriptive guidelines during building design to improve IAQ. Particulate matter (PM) as an air pollutant is linked to adverse epidemiological chronic health outcomes. However, these health outcomes attributable to PM exposure during the operational stage have not been widely studied in the building design context. This paper proposes an application framework to model health impact by dynamically aggregating disability-adjusted life year (DALY) for specific sex, age group and chronic health outcomes. An application of this framework that quantifies the health impact under various PM exposure scenarios for the ongoing development of an energy-health nexus digital twin is also presented.
