Abstract

‘Resilience’ referred to as the ‘dynamic process that leads to positive adaptations within the context of significant adversity’, is a popular term in research and practice with disadvantaged and marginalised groups, centralising the role of ‘positive emotions’, ‘successful traits’ and coping mechanisms. Recent scholars who advocate resilience (e.g. Luthar, Masten, Ungar), are driven by three core questions, ‘What are the challenges’; ‘How is the person doing’; ‘What processes support success’, resulting in numerous resilience scales/questionnaires/tools informing early intervention with vulnerable children. However, despite over a century of childhood resilience research, there is little consensus or agreement on the referent of the term, with marginalised and displaced children positioned as objects rather than coproducers of knowledge, and key terms, such as ‘success’, lacking definitional clarity. In this talk Dr Sims-Schouten will provide new ways of looking at resilience, providing examples of children and young people’s unique ways of coping in light of adversity and making recommendations for practice in education and beyond.
