Abstract

Introduction: Equitable partnerships and transdisciplinary research have been considered critical to generate high quality evidence and share relevant knowledge in responding to health, economic, and social challenges. However, there are gaps in understanding the mechanisms in which the research-policy partnership can timely produce and effectively use evidence to address policy demands in development contexts. / Aim: We aim to highlight key challenges and lessons learnt from the research-policy partnership using a case study of Southeast Asia Evidence Policy Partnership (SEA-EPP)- a newly established partnership aiming to build capacity for evidence generation and use in social systems. / Methods: We conducted a series of group discussions, engaged with key stakeholders, organised workshops and conferences, and set up a ‘research partnership’ project working with academics and research users. / Results: We develop key principles and identify potential strategies, challenges, and outcomes through feedback and outputs from the partnership. We highlight opportunities for creating safe spaces and trust between researchers and policy makers through on-going communication and engagement with evidence champions within the research and policy institutions. / Conclusions: The notions of collaboration, coordination, and partnership are closely linked. Researchers and policy actors need to learn and support each other to build effective and resilient evidence ecosystems.
