Abstract

This thesis explores the perspectives of course trainers involved in equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) work and Black trainee clinical psychologists on navigating adaptive challenges during Clinical Psychology Doctorate Training (DClinPsy). Part one is a Conceptual Introduction, which aims to outline and define key concepts, and review and synthesise relevant extant research. This outline also reveals the gap in the literature that had not explored the perspectives of both trainers and trainees despite their existence within the same system. The researcher’s position and study aims are outlined. Part two through the qualitative methodology Grounded Theory, elucidates the nuances and complexities of navigating adaptive challenges from course trainers involved in EDI work and Black trainees in the DClinPsy. Ten course trainers and ten Black trainees participated via online semi-structured interviews. Analysis revealed one joint theoretical model which constructed five main core categories, experienced by both groups of participants: ‘Constraints’, ‘Attacks’, ‘The Residuals’, ‘Sustaining’ and ‘Possibilities’. Similarities and differences between participants were elicited through comparisons of the categories and subcategories. Part Two concludes with an overview of the theoretical model and how it met the study's aims. The strengths, limitations, and implications of the empirical study are explored to inform the recommendations. Part Three provides a critical appraisal of the research process. Reflecting on the research topic and methodology, the conducting of research interviews, analysis, and results. The researcher’s insider-outsider position and personal and professional experiences informed these reflections. The empirical study’s strengths, limitations, and plans for dissemination, will be expanded upon.
