Abstract

Pupils with an Intellectual Disability who are attending a mainstream school often experience bullying (Norwich and Kelly, 2004). This study aims to assess children’s attitudes towards images of non-typically developing peers. 12 photographs were shown to children aged either 5, 7 or 9 each with a short paragraph describing the photographed child’s ability. Five questions were asked to assess the child’s attitude from a questionnaire adapted by Piercy, Wilton and Townsend (2002). The results indicate a significant positive correlation between the present amount of contact with a child with an intellectual disability and total acceptance scores of the images. Indicating a child’s acceptance level is higher when they have more contact currently with non-typically developing peers.
