Abstract
Traditional Chinese Medicine (tcm) is one of the most ancient and complex medical systems ever developed. Its theory comprises a series of inextricable mechanisms and systems that explain the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual functioning of the human body, taking a holistic perspective to the study of people’s health. This article describes the basic theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine as a starting point from which to observe its relation to the western psychological paradigm and to contemplate a possible integration of both models. The research discusses the proven effects of tcm on patients’ physical health and relates its principles to Psychoanalysis, Behavioral-Cognitive Therapy, and Humanism (mainly Gestalt Theory).
