Abstract

This Introduction to the book School Leadership and Education System Reform (Earley and Greany, Eds, 2017, Bloomsbury) sets out the rationale for the book and outlines the nature of the different contributions. It argues that the book reflects a paradox and quest. The paradox is actually a series of tensions that sit at the heart of schools policy in many systems around the world - for example between the push for high standards in literacy and numeracy and the need for broad and balanced curricula. The quest is for forms of leadership which can consistently resolve these tensions in practice at school level. The Introduction explores existing evidence in relation to this theme and sets out some of the key issues that arise and which are explored in greater depth in the book.
