Additional information: The authors would like to dedicate the following words in memory of Mike Nicholson. Mike Nicholson was an enthusiastic and very able statistician. He worked for over 30 years as a statistician advising scientists - chiefly in fisheries and environmental monitoring of water quality. Especially in his latter years, his publication rate in applied journals was very high and his work with Rob Fryer in assessing the power of surveys to monitor contaminants has been extremely influential in UK and European survey design. He combined his statistical abilities with a quirky sense of humour and an interest in physical exercise (running, football, squash, karate, cycling etc). His biggest sporting claim to fame was being reserve goalkeeper for Scottish schoolboys in the late 1960s. He died, aged 56, in 2003 after cycling up one of the Tour de France mountains and then crashing on the descent. He is much missed by many people.
