Abstract

Data collected in 24 sites in Eastern Amazon forest, Brazil. There is a dataset for each group sampled, namely butterflies, dung beetles, and trees. An additional dataset (data_othervariables.csv) provides measured environmental variables that were also used in the analysis. Further details on the methodology used to collect and analyse the data can be found in Chapters 4 of the following reference: Milheiras, S. (2019) Linking people and nature in the multifunctional landscapes of Eastern Amazonia. [PhD thesis] Centre for Biodiversity and Environmental Research, UCL (University College London): London, UK. The following variables are present in at least one of the datasets: "x_coord": Longitude (decimal degrees) "y_coord": Latitude (decimal degrees) "forest_use": Forest use category (PRI=old-growth forest; BN= Brazil nut extraction area; RIL= reduced impact logging area; PLA= eucalyptus plantation) "site": Name of each sampling plot "season": Season when the sampling occurred "day": Indication if collection occurred in the first, second, or third visit to the butterfly trap "family": Taxonomic rank "subfamily": Taxonomic rank "species": Taxonomic rank "dbh": Diameter at breast height (cm) "slope": Plot slope (degrees) "elevation": Plot elevation (meters) "sand": Sand percentage in the soil (%) "canopy": Canopy openness (i.e., vegetation cover fraction) "dist_road": Distance to nearest road (meters) "fire_5km": Number of registered fires within a 5km radius "defor_5km": Deforested area within a 5km radius (hectares)
