Abstract

Large projection displays are becoming more and more ubiquitous in urban spaces. However, there is currently no methodology for designing display walls as an integral part of the urban built environment. This paper reviews the application of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) -display walls and large projection screens on buildings as an emergent new type of urban form in major cities around the world. It reflects on influential examples of certain applications and interventions in the urban public realms that we have explored. Here we describe the characteristics of these applications and discuss potential concerns and relevant issues that might arise. We suggest that in order to achieve real integration on an urban level we need to consider the design of space as a whole, bringing together the physical space, dynamic visual information and the interaction space, and featuring information communicated on an urban scale in respect of social, cultural political or community shared content. This review presents a starting point for anyone interested in beginning research or using projection screens and display walls in the urban environment.
