Abstract

The study of the mechanical properties of structured soils requires specific laboratory testing equipment. For the case of triaxial tests, the equipment must be provided with special techniques, such as: local strain measurement and automatic stress path control. When the soil is unsaturated, the equipment needs suction control imposed on the specimen. This dissertation deals with the development of an automated triaxial equipment for the study of structured soils, either saturated or unsaturated. This equipment was assembled with parts easily available in the local market. The equipment has local strain measurement based on Hall effect sensors, with a resolution of 10-4 both for axial and radial measurement. It also has a sistem of proportional valves for the control of applied pressures. The material investigated is a residual soil of botucatu sandstone, sampled from a quarry near the RS 239 road, showing na average void ratio of 0,62. From triaxial test result, shear strength envelopes were identified both for the peak strength and for the strength corresponding to strains > 10%. A yield surface was also identified. The effect of cementation, both on the yield surface and Young's modulus, was noticed by examining stress-strain curves, which clearly shows a change of behaviour related to progressive material destructuring.
