Abstract
Pausanias once declared that one could not use the term 'city' for something lacking public buildings and plazas. The main intention of this survey is to study some newly design public spaces in London and discover what are the characteristics that could be used in the design of a public space and improve the thermal comfort of the users. In this survey five newly design public spaces had been monitored in terms of the weather conditions inside the space and in terms of the activities and the clothing levels of the users. The monitoring procedure had been carried out during June and lasted for 5 days. The days that the monitoring took place had similar climatic conditions. The results that were concluded after the analysis had showed how the design of the each square affects the thermal environment inside space. Some general suggestions have been made in order to help the designers to avoid solutions that will not benefit in the creation of an attractive and thermally comfortably environment. As a final conclusion of this survey the vital role of public spaces has to be highlighted. Creating public spaces where the thermal conditions will encourage people to use them will not only benefit the quality of people's lives but also minimise the C02 and protect the environment in general.
