Abstract
Just over 1% of the total population of the United Kingdom are currently serving a prison sentence. The link between poor education and crime is well established, and in recent years the proportion of people with poor literacy in the prison population and on remand has started to gain increased attention. Current figures from the BSA’s screening test offered to all new prisoners at the start of their custodial sentence indicate that as many as 1 in 2 prisoners have difficulties with reading (48%) and that number-work difficulties are even more prevalent (65%)
