Abstract
In early Classical Greek literature (tragedy and choral song) the most common, indeed only metaphor used to characterise human memory was writing on a wax tablet (deltos). This chapter examines the evidence for the metaphor in early poetry and speculates about the possible links between the poetry and the later use of the metaphor in philosophical discussions of memory (Plato and Aristotle). It also discusses how the metaphor helps us to understand the cultural meaning and function of early written texts.
