Abstract

One of the most important tasks in ultimate limit state design (LSD) of ship structures is to calculate the ultimate strength of individual structural members in addition to that of hull girders. This article presents the methods for ultimate strength calculations of basic structural members of ship structures such as beams, columns, beam–columns, plates and stiffened panels, and also those of hull girders. Relevant design principles and ultimate LSD criteria are also discussed.
